More stoker engine final assembly is taking place. Click for captions!

Piston assemblies ready for install into block. Refurbished rods. New cast iron pistons which are 1/16” oversized. New rings. New cotter pins to lock nuts in place. Green Velvet Steam oil used for assembly lube.

Testing fit up of ring compression sleeve. This squeezes the rings to the same diameter of the piston so that the assembly will fit into the bore.

Fitting up new graphite impregnated packing braid into each of the piston packing glands. Three pieces in each gland. Packing braid ends are taper cut so they overlap and each braid ring is staggered so the joints don't fall in line with each other.

Gland adjusts the fit of the packing to the piston shaft. As it is tightened up the cupped ends of the gland force the packing against the shaft. These got liberal steam oil applied during assembly.

Right piston ready to go in. Struck with a heavy wood mallet to pop into the bore. The compression sleeve stops at the block face and the compressed rings slip into the bore.

Both pistons in their bores. Oil sheen makes the bores look odd in the photo. They really are round and true! Those are the valve piston connecting rods sitting on the bench awaiting their turn.

Powder coated cylinder heads mated up. These can't be tightened up until engine timing is set but will keep the cylinders clean for now.

Starting to look pretty complete. Crank rotates nice and smooth. Pretty neat seeing pistons move back and forth again. Did the math and this engine displaces 402 cubic inches. Thats a big block Chevy with two pistons!!
